Barcelona, part 2

Yesterday was a beautiful day with the weather being a hot 29 degrees. We wanted to go and visit the market to look at all the amazing food here in Barcelona. Well, ok, it was me that wanted to look at the food! Plus, we wanted to buy something to take on a picnic lunch.

The Mercat de La Boqueria is the main food market, similar to the Queen Victoria market. It was huge and busy with locals and lots of tourists. There were stalls selling everything! Spanish cheeses of all sorts, jamon (ham), salami, breads, seafood of every kind, meat, fruit and vegetables. It was amazing! I was certainly in my element and could have wandered all day.

We bought some fresh bread, cheese, figs, berries, ostrich and deer salami for our lunch. And an ice cream to eat while we walked.

Near the main city of Barcelona is a hill with an old fortress called Castell de Montjuic. We walked up here for our lunch. It was a long, hot walk to the top, but the view over the Mediterranean sea and city was worth it!

We found a shady spot in the garden to enjoy our picnic. Just perfect.

After a relaxing lunch, we walked up to the fortress on the top and looked around. It was used to defend Barcelona in the 1700’s.

By the time we'd walked back to our hotel, we were exhausted. We had walked 18km! Time for a swim in the pool to cool down and relax.

We have been enjoying local tapas for dinner every night. Small plates of food to share, including chorizo, prawns, croquettes, anchovies and peppers. Everything has been delicious and we are having something new and different each day.

Today is our last day in Barcelona before we catch the train to San Sebastian. We're planning to take it easy and do some shopping. Life is tough!

And guess what Ella and Angus. They call a supermarket; a supermercat. It sounds like Super Meerkat. It has become our little joke.
